Pastor Jeff believes that Give Every Day is an important initiative for Portico members to serve in their community and the world. “Portico calls people to connect, grow and serve. There are so many people without hope – it’s our responsibility as Christians to bring hope by serving our community and the world as part of our Christian walk.”

Give Every Day captured his imagination for the impact it could have on their missions program. It is connected it to their One Hope Benefit concert that the church holds at Christmas time where the proceeds are given to charitable organizations in the community. This is a way to personalize Give Every Day to Portico. They adopted the style of the Give Every Day brochure for their materials.

They released the brochure in August and immediately had some people demonstrate their commitment by agreeing to automatic debit from their bank accounts.

The coffee cups have been sold and used as a daily, visual reminder to give generously every day. Some have used it as a way to save money on daily coffee, and others will use it as a collection vessel. Either way, it has helped people to give more intentionally.

Malawi’s economy continues to be on a roller coaster ride and this has a very large impact on the expenses at the Village of Hope.

Funds to Feed The People

Pray that God would continue to provide the funds for us to feed the 100 people who come here for three meals each day, as well as for the overall economic situation in the country.

Hot Water Tanks Needed

Please ask the Lord to provide for the replacement of three hot water tanks that have rusted beyond repair. Without them, water has to be boiled for each child to bathe. Would you continue to ask the Lord to spiritually develop our children and staff, and raise up godly leaders amongst us.

Pray that God would give us clear direction with regards to school buildings, as well as unshakable faith in His ability to provide beyond our needs. Pray that God’s power would rule over Village of Hope and that the enemy’s tactics would be defeated.

Understanding what God is asking for

When it comes to giving, the question “how much is enough?” is quite common. Unfortunately, this question reveals a stingy heart attitude towards giving—something that we should seek to overcome because, ultimately, the biblical answer to this question is: 100%.

In the New Testament, Jesus makes it clear that God wants us to give everything: “in the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:33). Similarly, Jesus said, “whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it” (Mark 8:35).

These commands go far above and beyond the Old Testament law, in which God required 10% of each person’s income (Numbers 18:26). In fact, Jesus scorned the Pharisees who carefully tithed 10%, but failed to love God (Luke 11:42).

What, then, does God want?

Like the poor widow, God desires giving that requires personal sacrifice and faith (Mark 12:43). He desires us to care for the poor (1 John 3:16-17). Most importantly, however, God wants us to love and to follow Him—to be obedient to give anything, even our lives, if He asks (Luke 18:22).

How does this knowledge challenge you to give more of yourself in your daily living?

Give Every Day is absolutely fantastic because it has the potential to empower people to do the work of the Kingdom. This program is a way to respond in a practical manner to the great commission.

With Give Every Day, it could mean that each year, hundreds of kids and youth in Quebec would have an opportunity to hear the gospel for the first time. That would make a huge impact in the province of Quebec! Give Every Day would soften the challenge of fundraising and leave more time for field ministry directly with the youth.

If Give Every Day becomes a reality, it would mean that money could stop being the big challenge that it is now for us and we would be empowered to reach out more quickly and with more efficiency.

-Daniel and Catherine Perrée are missionaries among high school and university students.

Understanding what we have

God has equipped each one of us with unique abilities that allow us to serve others in invaluable ways. Whether rich or poor, young or old, we all have something to offer.

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever” (1 Peter 4: 10-11, TNIV).

What unique gifts has God given you?

Have you been challenged to use them in new ways recently?

Consider taking a “spiritual gifts” inventory to identify your unique areas of gifting, if you are not sure of what they are.

We had driven 555 kms of bad road last week — and felt like Paul the Apostle after one of his narrow escapes from the mobs. But that was nothing. The Zambian Church-Planters and evangelists we met cover roughly the same distance on bicycle, four times a year, to reach their neighbours!

The war is over in Angola, landmines largely removed — the land has great openness, and huge need, for the gospel. Our fledgling group of pastors and evangelists, with the most meagre resources, have planted 19 churches over the past five years, biking into Angola!

“All we need are bicycles,” they say. “Oh, and maybe some tents.” They get caught in frequent downpours in this high country, one time tucking into a little shelter that “kept our tops dry, but our feet were sticking outside!”

After its decades of suffering, war-torn Angola has myriads of orphans and amputees. One way of making a difference now is supporting one of the most impressive and committed little mission bands that we have ever met, the Mwinilunga Missions Committee of the PAOZ.

Understanding why God asks us to give

Everyone experiences hardships: in relationships, in health, and in finances. Any one of these factors can keep us from giving our time, energy, love, or money to others. If we merely give out of the abundance of our time or resources, little faith and little self-sacrifice is required.

When we give sacrificially, however, we are acting in obedience to our Saviour, who warned us: “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24).

When God prompts us to give in difficult, or even seemingly “impossible” circumstances, He is often seeking to test or reset our divided affections.

God doesn’t need our time or our money but he does want our hearts—He made us, so He knows that asking us to give is the perfect way to break our love of money and of self, and redirect our devotion to Him.

God’s wisdom is at work in our lives. How does knowing this help you to cope in difficult circumstances?

How might God be challenging you to imitate the sacrificial love that Christ has shown?

Harlyn Purdy‘s vision is to see the country of Malawi become a nation under God by training one leader at a time at the Pentecostal Bible College of Malawi.

God is calling the future leaders of Malawi but they need help to secure their education so that they can take the gospel into remote villages, towns, and cities.

One student scholarship is just $50 month – would you Give Every Day to impact the nation of Malawi?

Our love for Him.

In Matthew 22, a religious leader asks Jesus, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” (Matthew 22:36). Jesus replies, “’Love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment” (Matthew 22:37).

While working to understand and live out biblical stewardship, we must not forget to love the Lord first and foremost, above everything. It’s only out of our love for Him that we will find the courage and strength to give in the way that He desires. Here are some words from A. W. Tozer* that are worth reflecting on:

“The teaching of the Bible is that God is Himself the end for which man was created. ‘Whom have I in heaven but thee?’ cried the psalmist, ‘and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee’ (Psalm 73: 25). The first and greatest commandment is to love God with every power of our entire being. Where love like that exists there can be no place for a second object. If we love God as much as we should surely we cannot dream of a loved object beyond Him which He might help us to obtain.”
